ASDO 6101 - Clinical Dentistry 2B 23 credit hours
Introduction to Clinic: This comprehensive module introduces and reviews the foundational skills and concepts necessary for patient care. You’ll master essential clinical procedures, including infection control, operating and maintaining the dental unit, four-handed dentistry, and administering local anesthesia. The curriculum emphasizes patient assessment (taking vitals, performing comprehensive oral exams, prescribing, and analyzing radiographs, non-surgical periodontal therapy (instrument selection and adaptation), and using dental software for accurate documentation (SOAP). Furthermore, the course integrates crucial topics of professionalism, addressing medical emergencies, communication challenges, legal issues (HIPAA), and managing diverse patient populations, while also establishing a foundational knowledge of dental materials, restorative indications, and occlusal concepts. Other simulation activities that support patient care will be included. A pre-clinical competency must be passed during this module as part of obtaining clinical privileges.
Specialties- Fixed Partial Dentures: This comprehensive module in fixed prosthodontics focuses on the design, preparation,fabrication, and delivery of crowns and fixed partial dentures (FPDs). Students will gain practical skills in preparing teeth and fabricating definitive restorations—including all-gold, metal-ceramic, and all-ceramic (including CAD/CAM/CEREC)—while considering the esthetic, biologic, and mechanical principles of each. The curriculum covers essential procedures such as occlusal adjustment, making, and evaluating elastomeric impressions, fabricating provisional restorations, and mastering color selection and cementation for optimal clinical outcomes.
Prosthodontics - Implantology: The implant module presents basic understanding of the biological aspects necessary for successful implant therapy.
Specialties - TMD: The emphasis of this course is the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of the most common temporomandibular disorders. The lectures are organized in a sequence which will allow the student to understand the concepts in diagnosis and apply that understanding to the laboratory experiences.
Specialties - Endodontics II: This course will acquaint the student with a simulated clinical application of the principles of endodontic therapy. Procedures will be performed on extracted teeth and the progression of the student will be evaluated and monitored throughout the course. As a prerequisite, the student should have an understanding of histology, general tooth anatomy, infection, inflammation and repair. Also, knowledge of managing the medically compromised patient. and systemic diseases.
Specialties - Radiology III: This module will describe the principles of radiographic image acquisition for intraoral and panoramic x-ray modalities, radiobiology, radiation safety, recognition of radiographic anatomy, and interpretation of radiographic pathoses
Specialties - Periodontics III: This intermediate course focuses on the application of basic sciences to clinical problems in periodontology. Students will be able to focus on the classification of periodontal diseases, diagnosis and management of periodontal diseases and non-surgical and surgical treatment. Emphasis will be placed on etiology, pathogenesis, treatment modalities and therapeutic and preventive periodontics in a clinical setting. Students will be able to support their treatment decisions with evidence-based literature.
Specialties - Orthodontics: This module will aid students in the recognition and diagnosis of basic orthodontic conditions as well as minor treatment modalities.
