ASDO 5001 - Fundamentals of Patient Management 1B 14 credit hours
Body Systems - Neuroscience: This module covers the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, cranial nerves, special sensory and autonomic nervous system which will be explored in terms of their structure, function, dysfunction, and clinical relevance to medicine and dentistry.
Body Systems – Gastrointestinal (GI): This module offers a detailed exploration of the gastrointestinal (GI) system, covering its basic functions, anatomy, physiology, and pathology from the oral cavity to the large intestine. Students will gain in-depth knowledge about the regulation of the GI system, the composition and function of saliva (including the causes and treatment of salivary gland hypofunction), and the processes of gustation and mastication. The course systematically reviews the anatomy, physiology, and common pathologies associated with the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, and large intestine.
Body Systems – Renal: This module provides a comprehensive study of the renal system, beginning with a deep dive into renal anatomy and the fundamental processes of glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and secretion. It covers key physiological mechanisms, including the calculation of renal clearance and blood flow, the mechanism of countercurrent multiplication, the maintenance of electrolyte balance, and the micturition reflex. Finally, the course integrates clinical application by examining renal assessment tests, dialysis, and relevant topics in renal/urology pathology and pharmacology.
Head and Neck Anatomy II:
This module will allow the application of knowledge of human anatomy as it relates to bones, nerves, vasculature, muscles, spaces, and viscera of the head and neck region. Students will be able to think critically about aspects of head and neck anatomy that are relevant to their clinical practice in dentistry, its specialties, and consultation or collaboration for patient care with medical colleagues.
Professionalism: The purpose of this module is to impress upon students the importance of professional behavior in their lives and careers.
Cultural Proficiency: The Cultural Proficiency Module is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and practices to cultivate cultural proficiency in professional dental settings. Via the use of class discussions, activities, self-reflection exercises, and other active learning techniques, students are introduced to the concept of Cultural Proficiency including its meaning, guiding principles, essential elements, the Cultural Proficiency Continuum, and barriers to cultural proficiency development. Students also learn various methods, techniques, and models to better understand the dynamics of cross-cultural interaction and to bridge communication barriers with diverse populations.
